How do
you track all the submissions you've made to the search engines? In a
word, work. There's no simple way to stay on top of all the work you've
done submitting your site to all the search engines.
If you
have used a submission service, it's still important to check their work
and make sure that what you got (and paid for) is what you expected. If
your results aren't what you were looking for, you will have to correct
the errors.
There
lies one of the advantages to doing it yourself, you have COMPLETE control
over each submission. Because database aren't refreshed as often as you
might like, an error in an important search engine submission can linger
for a LOOOOONG time and seem impossible to correct. Thus, it behooves
you to be sure that it's done correctly the first time, even if it takes
a great deal more effort up front.

TAKE
NOTES!!!!
Rushing
through your manual search engine submissions without any possibility
of reconstructing what you did, when you did it, and how you did
it will without a doubt ruin your chances for getting a good position
in the searches submitted by your potential customers. SO... be
sure to write down everything about what you're doing. It's a pain,
to be sure, but it will pay off in the long run. PC Mojo has gone
the rush-rush route when a newbie in the business, and it ended
up causing us headaches.
If
you're not good at taking notes, figure out some way to make it
easier for you to do. It will save you a lot of time in the long
run, and the SECOND time you have to repeat the procedure, you will
have accurate information about what worked and what didn't for
YOUR site(s). So, it MAY cost you a little time the first time you
do it, but it will save you more time with each site you publish.

I
only have one site, who cares?
How can you be sure you won't need to repeat the submissions you
have spent so much time making? Suppose you are bought out by another
company and have to move your entire site over to a new domain?
There's a bazillion different scenarios that may cause you to dive
into the search engine registration procedure again, and if you
don't have notes, you will NOT remember the effective ways to do
it.

There
must be an easier way!
Funny
you should mention that! PC Mojo has designed a database (MS Access)
to track everything related to search engine, banner swaps, link exchange,
and award programs. By using this database, we are able to reuse the
same text over and over again, simply cutting and pasting EFFECTIVE
keywords, descriptions, etc. into the search engine forms and hitting
the submit button. We can rip through all of the major search engines
in less than half a day, and end up with an effectively registered
site. Not only that, but we then have a complete record of everything
we did, when we have to follow up, any obligations we need to fulfill,
and the places we have to go to check our results. It's a pretty cool
application! If you're interested, it's a freebie right now for all
our clients! |
